May 5th is Boys Day in Japan. The flying carp and miniature samurai helmet are meant to be symbols of a strong and healthy boy. On the table there is a chocolate cake shaped like a helmet, chimaki (a kind of "sweet rice paste," wrapped in an iris or bamboo leaf) and some other traditional Japanese food. Leo seemed happy but then again he's usually quite pleased about almost everything.

I am learning much about Japanese tradition and culture, by reading your postings here. But I'm curious as to whether older boys (such as yourself) also get to celebrate - get presents, or are pampered on this day.
ReplyDeleteSadly, older boys, such as myself, are pretty much neglected especially when there are cuter boys with chubbier cheeks crawling around. Girls Day is March 3rd (3/3) and Boys Day is May 5th (5/5) so the gays and transexuals have adopted April 4th as their day (which was the day that the Penis festival was held - for more on that check out this link http://picasaweb.google.com/105716986107783837301/KawasakiFertilityFestival?feat=directlink
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that the older boys are regulated to "less-than-cute" status.
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, its nice to see that all sorts of people are being accommodated for, though at Leo's age, I think there are few that would celebrate on April 4th.
